Resources | Chicago Purchasing Managers Index

Description:
Measures industrial output in the Midwest region

Released:
On the final business day of the month being covered at 10am

Calculation:
The organization known as the National Association of Purchasing Management surveys approximately 200 purchasing managers covering Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana. The survey focuses on five primary areas and each of these areas is weighted appropriately and the entire weighted average is adjusted to account for seasonal variations.

Key Point:
Much attention is given to the Chicago PMI for two primary reasons. First, this index is released one business day before the national PMI, so the Chicago index gives a preview of what to expect from the national figure. Secondly, the index only covers the Midwest which is considered the most important region in the US for manufacturing because it includes Detroit’s auto industry.
