Construction Spending is divided into 3 main categories: Private construction for residences, Private nonresidential structures, and Public construction. The government computes the value of construction spending by using its own housing starts and permit numbers as well as contacting commercial real estate builders for nonresidential construction.
Key Point:
Construction Spending data is a very important economic indicator because it includes both residential and nonresidential construction. As a whole, building activity accounts for 9% of GDP and Construction Spending data is the only indicator which reflects this entire amount.
