Description:
A dollar figure much like the “Durable Goods Orders,” except factory orders account for non-durable goods also. Non-durable goods have a short life span and include items such as food and clothing. This is quite important since nondurable goods make up roughly 47% of all factory orders. The numbers are not adjusted for inflation.
Released:
4-5 weeks after survey month at 10 am
Calculation:
The Department of Commerce contacts 3,500 manufacturers in 89 industries about new orders, shipments, and inventories. An order is only counted if it has a contract signed for delivery of the item. The dollar figure is made after discounts, but before freight charges are placed.
Key Point:
The most important piece of this report is the change in Durable Goods ordered because durable goods are a leading indicator of economic activity.
